Android notification channels let you silence noisy categories (marketing, suggestions) while keeping important alerts (security codes, messages from people).
Open channel settings
- Long-press a notification from the app → Settings or Customize, or
- Go to Settings → Apps → [App] → Notifications.
You should see separate categories such as Messages, General, Promotions, or Background. Names depend on the developer.
Smarter than “all off”
- Keep channels for one-to-one messages and security codes enabled.
- Disable or set to silent: tips, offers, “people you may know,” and high-frequency social alerts.
- Use Conversation prioritization on supported Android versions for people you actually reply to.
If channels look empty
Some apps only create channels after the first notification of that type. Trigger one alert, then return to settings. Manufacturer skins can also bury the menu under “App notifications.”
