Chat apps compress media and keep copies that bloat device storage. For large PDFs, videos, or project folders, a dedicated sharing method is usually cleaner.
Options that work well
- Cloud link — upload to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or similar, then share a link with access limits.
- Nearby Share / Quick Share — good for phones and laptops on the same network or in close range.
- Email attachments — fine for smaller documents; many providers limit size.
Before you share
- Confirm you are allowed to share the file (work and school policies often restrict this).
- Remove sensitive metadata if needed (location in photos, tracked changes in documents).
- Set link permissions to “anyone with the link” only when appropriate; prefer named recipients for private files.
- Expire or revoke the link after the recipient confirms download.
Avoid common mistakes
Do not upload private files to random “file host” sites that appear in search ads. Prefer well-known cloud providers or the official tools already on your phone. If an app asks for broad storage access only to send one file, consider whether a system share sheet is enough.
