How to Stop Unwanted Notifications on Android

Notifications are useful when they contain information you need, but promotional alerts and low-priority updates can quickly become distracting. Android lets you control notifications per app and, in many apps, by category or channel.

Turn off alerts from a specific app

When an unwanted notification appears, touch and hold it. Depending on your Android version and phone maker, you can turn off that notification category, change its priority or open the app’s notification settings. You can also go to Settings, Apps, choose the app and open Notifications.

Use notification categories

Some apps separate messages, promotions, downloads and reminders into different notification categories. Keep the categories you rely on and disable only the noisy ones. If an app offers no categories, use its own in-app notification preferences as well as Android settings.

Reduce lock-screen interruptions

Open Settings and find Notifications, then look for lock-screen notification controls. You can hide sensitive content or choose not to show notifications on the lock screen. Menu names vary by manufacturer.

Set up Do Not Disturb

Use Do Not Disturb when you need a quiet period. Review exceptions for calls, alarms, repeat callers and important conversations before enabling a schedule. Test the schedule so you do not silence alerts you depend on.

Keep essential alerts enabled

  • Keep security and account alerts that help protect your accounts.
  • Keep delivery, travel or banking alerts if you actively rely on them.
  • Disable marketing categories where the app provides that choice.
  • Revisit settings after major app updates, because categories can change.

Check app permissions too

Notification access is different from permissions such as camera or location. Review both separately. See how to identify apps using battery in the background if an app is also consuming power unexpectedly.
