A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server. That can help on public Wi‑Fi, but it is not a complete privacy solution and it will not make every site “safe.”
What a VPN can and cannot do
- Can: reduce casual snooping on shared networks; change the apparent network location of your traffic.
- Cannot: stop phishing, fix malware, or hide activity from the sites you log into.
- Depends: logging policy, jurisdiction, and whether the app implements a reliable kill switch.
Checklist before installing
- Prefer known providers with a clear no-logs policy and independent audits—marketing claims alone are not enough.
- Install from the official Play listing or the provider’s site via HTTPS.
- Review permissions; be skeptical of VPN apps that demand contacts or extensive device admin rights without explanation.
- Test: connect, visit a what-is-my-ip style page, then disconnect and confirm behavior.
Follow local laws. Some workplaces and schools restrict VPNs. See also privacy-focused browsers and our permissions guide.
