When battery life suddenly drops, do not begin by installing a cleaner or force-stopping every app. First identify what is using power. Open Settings and look for Battery, then Battery usage. On some phones, the screen is under Settings > Battery > Battery usage or Settings > Apps > App battery usage. Names and layouts vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Start with the battery usage screen
If your phone offers a view by app, select it and review the period shown. Compare the list with your normal use. A video app used for hours may reasonably appear near the top. An app you barely opened that shows unusually high background activity deserves a closer look.
Look at the time period and whether the screen reports foreground or background use. A high percentage is a clue, not proof that an app is defective. Consider what the app is designed to do and whether you recently changed its settings.
Understand foreground and background activity
Foreground use usually reflects time spent actively using an app. Background use can include syncing, location updates, uploads, notifications or other work while the app is not on screen. Navigation, fitness tracking, cloud backup and messaging apps may legitimately need some background activity.
Make one careful change at a time
- Update the app from its official store if an update is available.
- Review its background battery setting and use the phone’s recommended Optimised or Adaptive option where available.
- Check whether location access can be set to only while using the app when continuous access is not needed.
- If an app is unfamiliar or no longer useful, review its publisher and permissions before deciding whether to uninstall it.
Avoid restricting messaging, alarm, accessibility, security or device-management apps without understanding the effect. Restricting background activity can delay notifications, backups or other expected functions.
Compare results after a normal day
After making one change, use your phone normally and check the battery screen again. Battery estimates change with signal strength, screen brightness, gaming, video calls, mobile data and temperature. A single day is not always enough to identify a pattern.
If the drain continues
Restart the phone, install system updates, and check whether the battery problem began after a recent app or system update. If the phone becomes unusually hot, shuts down unexpectedly or battery life deteriorates sharply, consult the manufacturer or an authorised service provider. Do not install apps that promise impossible battery repairs.
