How to Keep Android Maps Useful Offline

Offline maps help in tunnels, rural areas, and international trips with expensive roaming. Not every maps app supports the same offline features.

Typical approach (Google Maps example)

  1. Search for a city or area → open the place page or profile tools → look for Offline maps / download.
  2. Download over Wi‑Fi before you travel.
  3. Update offline areas periodically; roads and businesses change.

Alternatives

Apps built around OpenStreetMap data sometimes allow larger offline regions and different privacy tradeoffs. Compare storage use, update frequency, and navigation quality for your route type (walking vs driving).

Open official listings from our Maps and Navigation category and confirm offline support on the publisher’s page before a trip. Also see privacy & permissions when granting location access.
